The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that the Bank of Canada held its interest rate at 2.25 per cent on Wednesday, citing a more resilient economy and contained inflationary pressures. The Post's Jordan Gowling writes that BOC Governor Tiff Macklem said in remarks in Ottawa: "In the current situation, governing council sees the current policy rate at about the right level to keep inflation close to 2 per cent while helping the economy through this period of structural adjustment. Nevertheless, uncertainty remains high and the range of possible outcomes is wider than usual." Mr. Macklem added if the outlook changes or there is a new shock, the BOC is prepared to respond. Wednesday's decision was widely expected by economists following better-than-expected growth in the third quarter and signs of improvement in the labour market. Economists expect the BOC to remain on the sidelines in 2026. BMO economist Douglas Porter said, "We shifted our call to no rate changes for all of 2026 recently, and today's messaging from the bank appears aligned with that view." Mr. Porter said he still thinks a rate cut is more likely than a hike next year, but that no rate moves at all is the most likely outcome.
