The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that a former OpenAI engineer was arrested for secretly installing a recording device in a conference room to gather information and was just days away from fleeing to Saudi Arabia, according to federal prosecutors. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, was fired from his job at the Microsoft-backed company. Following his arrest, his wife and young son left the country on a one-way ticket booked by a Saudi military official, prosecutors said. Federal prosecutors wrote that Mr. Alfozan has "at least two bank accounts in Saudi Arabia -- and [has] what appears to be considerable support from a foreign government." Prosecutors note Saudi Arabia has no extradition treaty with the U.S. Prosecutors say after Mr. Alfozan's arrest, Saudi officials purchased new plane tickets for the wife and son to leave the U.S. sooner than the Oct. 12 flight Mr. Alfozan initially booked. Prosecutors have not said what Mr. Alfozan might have wanted to do with the recordings, but say he was in "frequent communication" with a member of the Saudi royal family. OpenAI said the recording device Mr. Alfozan used was sophisticated.
