The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that King Charles III cautioned artificial intelligence leaders about the "existential dangers" of the technology in the wrong hands, urging for safeguards before it's too late. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the King hosted the co-founders of Nvidia and Google DeepMind, along with leaders from Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Anthropic, in Scotland amid concerns that safety efforts are falling behind the rapid development of powerful AI systems. Charles said AI had the potential to improve and save lives, particularly in life sciences and medicine. But its creators were increasingly warning that it could develop darker capacities, "perhaps even to take life," he said. He told leaders at his Dumfries House estate: "There seems urgency in adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands, and being used in potentially catastrophic ways. Surely we need sufficient means of control before it is all too late?" The guests included Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis, OpenAI's Sarah Friar, Anthropic's Tino Cuellar and British Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan.
