The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Canadians need dependable infrastructure to store, process and protect data. The Globe's guest columnist Kevin Yin writes that the goal is to secure reliable computing power, enhance jurisdiction over data, and strengthen domestic data centre development and operations. Economists typically focus on the location of capital rather than its ownership. However, data centres differ, as computational services can be supplied internationally, and economic benefits arise from learning to build and manage them. Like oil, data centres are becoming a strategic chokepoint, increasingly vital across the economy. As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in the basic functions of our society, Canada cannot afford to allow essential services or the accompanying domestic innovation to depend entirely on the decisions of foreign governments. While we cannot control how the United States governs access to its AI models, we must do what we can to reduce our dependence. Still, data centres impose real costs, and proposed projects have understandably faced backlash across Canada. The broader benefits that could motivate public support have not been adequately realized thus far.
