The National Post reports in its Friday edition that a 55-year-old Florida pastor is suing Microsoft-backed OpenAI and its chief executive officer, Sam Altman, alleging the company's chatbot discouraged him from seeking medical care and misdiagnosed his health issues. The Post's Chris Knight writes that on Monday, Scott Winters and Tech Justice Law filed a lawsuit in California alleging ChatGPT engaged in the unlicensed practice of medicine, exploited Mr. Winters' religious identity and trust to keep him engaged, and violated his privacy rights. The suit claims that in following ChatGPT's advice, Mr. Winters suffered a life-threatening pulmonary embolism that left the husband and father hospitalized for weeks and forced him into early retirement. "I had serious symptoms of a pulmonary embolism for six weeks that ChatGPT had wrongly attributed to something else," Mr. Winters said in a statement. "ChatGPT manipulated my own language and beliefs because it knew I was a pastor. Not only did I nearly die, but I also lost my job, my career, my ministry, my home, everything." The suit seeks financial damages and requests the court to halt ChatGPT Health's operations until its safety is verified by independent evaluators.
