The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the British Columbia government has hired lawyers in B.C. and California to hold Microsoft-backed OpenAI accountable for its role in the February shooting in Tumbler Ridge. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Attorney General Niki Sharma said no company or corporate leader should escape accountability when public safety is at stake. She said, "The province is preparing legal action to hold artificial intelligence company OpenAI and its decision makers accountable for their failure to notify law enforcement of the violent prompts made on its ChatGPT platform by the perpetrator prior to the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge." On Feb. 10, shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and brother at home, then moved to a local secondary school where she shot five students and an educational assistant before taking her own life. Her use of ChatGPT before the murders is now the subject of multiple lawsuits filed by families of the victims and community members against the chatbot's creator, OpenAI, and company founder Sam Altman. Ms. Sharma expressed shock that the killings could have been prevented if OpenAI had reported the shooter's "alarming" messages.
