The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Morgan Stanley analyst Vishwanath Tirupattur says the United States will need 300,000 new electricians in the next decade for data centre expansion. The Globe's Scott Barlow writes that additional shortages in energy, electrical equipment and water could slow artificial intelligence related infrastructure growth, which poses a challenge for global equity market leadership. Supplying power to new data centres is challenging, with equipment delivery times exceeding 125 weeks. Notably, the current and planned electrical power generation awaiting connection to the U.S. grid is twice the size of the existing supply. Water for cooling data centres is becoming a political and practical issue. Mr. Tirupattur noted S&P research indicating that 43 per cent of the world's data centres are in high water-stress areas. Supply shortages almost always create investment opportunities. Electrical power equipment, particularly the equipment needed to transmit 800-volt DC power that data centres are requiring, will benefit revenues for Eaton, Vertiv Holdings, Schneider Electric and ABB. Local power generation will attract investors as hyperscalers seek to power data centres off-grid.
