The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, May 2, edition that over two decades ago, as search engines emerged, brands began their initial efforts to gain on-line visibility. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson and Joe Castaldo write that Aldo Group chief investment officer Matthieu Houle says, "Retailers added fake keywords in white text on a white background to attract crawlers for search engines like Ask Jeeves, Yahoo and Google." Today executives are grappling with another major shift, as artificial intelligence powered chatbots upend the way consumers find information on-line. Shoppers looking for a wedding outfit or the best running shoes for wide feet are not asking Jeeves; they're asking Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT. More than half of Canadians have used AI for a shopping-related task, such as researching and comparing products. Another 48 per cent said that ChatGPT offered better recommendations than search engines. Catalog cofounder Hamish Gunasekara says, "There's a new customer on the Web, and that's an AI agent." Catalog takes Websites designed for humans and making them easier to process for AI applications, including information invisible to a human consumer.
