The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 21, edition that the Trump administration announced an artificial intelligence policy urging Congress to create legislation that pre-empts state rules, protects children and shields communities from high energy costs linked to the technology. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the White House aims for a uniform national framework instead of individual state plans.
In December, President Donald Trump announced he would withhold federal broadband funding from states with laws regulating AI if they hinder American dominance in technology.
Republican House leaders said the policy gives Congress a road map for legislation "that provides innovators with much-needed certainty, while protecting consumers and prioritizing kids' on-line safety."
The AI industry has driven significant profits in the tech sector, making Nvidia the world's largest company, while Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and Microsoft invest billions in the field.
The White House said it looked forward to working with Congress to turn the framework into legislation.
An adviser to Mr. Trump, Michael Kratsios, said, "We need one national AI framework, not a 50-state patchwork."
