NP/wire say Microsoft hears AI stealing news content

The National Post reports in its Friday, March 20, edition that news is unique, expensive to create and it has great value to artificial intelligence models. A Postmedia dispatch to the Post reports that without information, all the AI companies will have are empty data centres. AI is the perfect example of garbage-in, garbage-out. Bots are targeting news sites, making it hard to distinguish them from regular consumers. This has led to considerable intellectual property theft. Companies like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Canada's Cohere have been accused of scraping copyright-protected content from news articles. They provide detailed summaries, which take away audience, subscriptions and advertising revenue from publishers. Google has embedded AI-generated summaries directly into its search interface without providing publishers with an effective "opt-out" mechanism. If publishers block Google's AI crawler, they find themselves de-indexed or unable to attract traffic to their sites via search. Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Marc Miller says the recycling of news undermines its original purpose. He says it is important to have serious discussions with platforms, including AI companies, about this issue.
