The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Canadian experts must evaluate flagged ChatGPT conversations for signs of imminent harm to decide if police should be alerted, AI Minister Evan Solomon informed Microsoft-backed OpenAI chief executive officer Sam Altman on Wednesday. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that concerns have been raised about how artificial intelligence companies engage with law enforcement after it was revealed that OpenAI did not notify Canadian authorities about talks regarding gun violence that an 18-year-old women had with ChatGPT before fatally shooting eight people in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on Feb. 10. Mr. Solomon said that he informed Mr. Altman that, "When a flag comes up in Canada, it's Canadians who determine the legal threshold and mental-health assessment." OpenAI involves experts in assessments, and Mr. Altman agreed to include Canadians. Mr. Solomon inquired if this would occur in a Canadian office, and Mr. Altman said he is mulling it. He requested the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute review OpenAI's safety protocols for an objective opinion, which the company agreed to. He said, "We need transparency and a deeper assessment from our Canadian experts."
