Globe says Microsoft-backed OpenAI has made changes

2026-02-27 06:59 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Microsoft-backed OpenAI, whose AI chat platform had concerning interactions with the Tumbler Ridge shooter last summer, claims it has made changes to flag such content to law enforcement and will take additional steps to address recent federal concerns. The Globe's Justine Hunter and Joe Castaldo write that OpenAI, in a letter to Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon, promised immediate steps to "help prevent tragedies like this in the future." Mr. Solomon met with OpenAI officials after discovering they had shut down the shooter's account in June, 2025, for posts about gun violence but failed to contact the RCMP. The company began changes months ago to flag shooter exchanges on ChatGPT to law enforcement, according to vice-president Ann O'Leary. She said OpenAI is willing to work with the Canadian government and experts to continue strengthening its law enforcement referral criteria. "This will include continuing to analyze how imminent and credible risk is assessed, and transparency regarding our reporting to law enforcement." Ms. O'Leary revealed the shooter opened a second account after being banned for violating the company's violence policy.
