FP/wire say Microsoft-backed OpenAI had flagged killer

2026-02-24 09:04 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Microsoft-backed OpenAI flagged and banned the suspect in one of Canada's worst-ever mass shootings for violating ChatGPT's usage policy last June, without referring her to police. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that OpenAI said the suspected killer -- Jesse Van Rootselaar -- had an account that was detected by systems that scan for misuse, including the possible furthering of violent activities. The 18-year-old killed eight people and injured 25, before taking her own life at Tumbler Ridge, B.C., earlier this month. OpenAI identified an account associated with Van Rootselaar about eight months ago, with tools to detect misuse of its AI models to further violent activities, and banned it, the company said. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI identified Van Rootselaar after she described gun violence scenarios for several days, prompting an internal debate among staff about alerting the police. OpenAI considered referring the account to law enforcement but did not find credible or imminent planning. After the shooting, the company reached out to Canadian authorities. OpenAI said it trains ChatGPT to discourage imminent real-world harm.
