NP says Meta, rivals hear AI firms should pay for news

The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Feb. 24, edition that journalists provide new information which can change hearts, minds and government policy. The Post's guest columnist Anya Schiffrin writes that in July, 2023, after the Online News Act was passed, she urged Canadian news publishers to unite and negotiate for fair payments from platforms that benefit from their news. Since then, Google has been paying news businesses $100-million annually. Meta has refused to pay and is blocking news. Australian Competition and Consumer Commission former chair Rod Sims argued in a recent op-ed that since the implementation of news bargaining codes, generative artificial intelligence has surged and should be included under these codes. News organizations are concerned about large companies profiting from their content as traffic to news sites declines due to generative search replacing traditional search. Compounding the financial pressures on news businesses, large language models often scrape and summarize content without compensating original sources. Typically, these companies have content licencing agreements with only a few premium publishers, leaving many, including all Canadian news publishers, without support.
