The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Feb. 12, edition that two years ago OpenAI chief executive officer Sam Altman said he hated the idea of showing ads inside ChatGPT. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that this week OpenAI, which has backing from Microsoft, started showing ads inside ChatGPT. OpenAI is seeking new revenue sources, including selling ads in its chatbot, but faces significant challenges. The financial pressure is immediate. Last year, OpenAI pulled in about $13-billion (U.S.) in revenue. But over the next four years, it expects to spend about $100-billion (U.S.) more. Mr. Altman has had tremendous success raising money in recent years. But there are only so many places on the planet willing and able to part with the billions more that the company needs to pay for raw computing power. One option is to go public on Wall Street. OpenAI executives acknowledge the need to stem losses before achieving their goal of tripling revenue this year. They face challenges in areas where they lack experience, such as serving ads, which could risk user alienation. Additionally, they plan to monetize technology sales to businesses amid strong competition from rivals Alphabet's Google and Microsoft.
