The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Washington's attempts to break up Big Tech are struggling after setbacks in key monopoly cases that raise doubts about its strategy. A Financial Times dispatch to the Post reports that federal enforcers have struggled to persuade judges to require tech companies like Google and Meta to spin off segments of their businesses. The push to break up major U.S. companies represents a significant challenge to alleged anticompetitive practices in the tech industry. Prosecutors have won some landmark rulings that tech companies maintained illegal monopolies. But judges have been reluctant to reach for the strictest remedies and carve up businesses or unwind acquisitions, often many years after the fact. Pending monopoly cases against Apple and Amazon have raised concerns about the government's strategy to rein in these tech giants. "I wish courts had been more decisive" said Jonathan Kanter, former head of the antitrust division in the Department of Justice. He noted that the rulings indicated the U.S. was slow to respond as tech companies gained market dominance. "The key lesson is to prevent monopolies from forming or sustaining themselves illegally," Kanter stated.
