The National Post reports in its Tuesday, July 8, edition that one thing artificial intelligence will never replace is lawyers. The Post's Chris Selley writes that it is one thing to let Microsoft-back ChatGPT screw up your term paper that you could not be bothered to write; it is another thing entirely to entrust your freedom or your livelihood to technology that is, to say the very least, unreliable. Some lawyers have been trying -- and getting busted. Turns out the technology has a hilarious habit of inventing jurisprudence. In May this year, a California judge admonished two law firms for submitting fake AI-generated references in a lawsuit against an insurance company. Judge Michael Wilner wrote: "Directly put, Plaintiff's use of AI affirmatively misled me. I read their brief, was persuaded (or at least intrigued) by the authorities that they cited, and looked up the decisions to learn more about them -- only to find that they didn't exist. That's scary. ... Strong deterrence is needed to make sure that attorneys don't succumb to this easy shortcut." In that case, "strong deterrence" amounted to a $31,000 fine. Mr. Selley says an immediate disbarment would have been more appropriate.
