The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 2, edition that Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft-backed OpenAI and its chief executive officer Sam Altman, claiming that they have abandoned the company's original mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity and not for profit. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that late on Thursday, a lawsuit was filed in California Superior Court in San Francisco which represents the culmination of Mr. Musk's long-simmering opposition to the start-up he co-founded. This start-up has since become the face of generative AI, partly due to the billions of dollars it received from Microsoft. As a result, Mr. Musk has founded his own artificial intelligence start-up, xAI, which he launched in July of last year. Mr. Musk alleged a breach of contract, saying Mr. Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman originally approached him to make an open source, non-profit company, but the start-up established in 2015 is now focused on making money. Mr. Musk said the three men had agreed to work on artificial general intelligence, a concept that machines could handle tasks like a human, but in a way that would "benefit humanity," according to the lawsuit.
