The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the "Takeover of the Year" goes to Twitter. Globe columnist Gordon Pape writes that Elon Musk decided he wanted to own Twitter so he could bring it into line with what he declared to be "the principles of free speech," and offered $44-billion for the privilege (all figures U.S.). Twitter's board agreed. On second thought, Mr. Musk decided, hmm, maybe not. Twitter sued. A court said, "It's yours, Mr. Musk." He paid up and changed the name to X, which may be how he signs cheques. He then spent the rest of the year trying to kill the business. Breakthrough of the Year goes to artificial intelligence. It all became real in 2023, as students used ChatGPT to write essays and Sports Illustrated used it to replace reporters. Last week Alphabet unveiled its new generative AI model, called Gemini. It accepts multiple types of data as inputs, combining text, images, audio, video and programming. Whose job is safe? Rookie of the Year goes to Arm Holdings PLC. The company went public on Sept. 14, with an initial public offering worth $54.5-billion. That was the largest IPO since EV maker Rivian in 2021. IPO shareholders, who got in at $51, saw the stock close Monday at $64.89.
