The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that white-collar workers may be worried about artificial intelligence taking over their jobs, but the majority would welcome the robots if it meant an end to time-wasting tasks that are causing them to burn out. The Post's Victoria Wells writes that recent Microsoft research says people may be far more open to AI than previously assumed. Microsoft interviewed more than 31,000 workers across 31 countries, including Canada, for its recent 2023 work trend index. Although almost half of those surveyed fear their jobs will be taken over by AI, 70 per cent said they had used the technology as much as possible to ease their burdens at work. An observer says, "It's fascinating that people are more excited about AI rescuing them from burnout than they are worried about it eliminating their jobs." The surprising results hint that burnout rates among employees could be even greater than many have considered. Microsoft said almost two in three workers are drowning in tasks that eat up time and mental energy. People are also putting in more hours on the job, only to end up attending even more meetings or sending more e-mails, racking up what Microsoft calls "digital debt."
