The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Jan. 28, edition that the U.S. dollar fell to a four-year low against other currencies on Tuesday after President Donald Trump described its value as "great," despite concerns about its decline. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the comment pressured the dollar, which has been under strain as traders anticipate a potential co-ordinated currency intervention by U.S. and Japanese authorities. Bannockburn Capital Markets analyst Marc Chandler says Mr. Trump's remark signals to the market that the United States would prefer a weaker dollar. The dollar's recent weakness is due to factors like Mr. Trump's policies and concerns about Federal Reserve independence, analysts say. Disagreement between Republicans and Democrats over Homeland Security funding, following the fatal shooting of a second U.S. citizen by federal immigration officers in Minnesota, raises concerns about another government shutdown. Corpay strategist Karl Schamotta says: "With the 'tariff man' showing no sign of repentance and the U.S. government headed into another shutdown, economic policy uncertainty is soaring once again, leading to an intensification in the 'Sell America' trade."
