The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that with grocery prices remaining stubbornly high and the cost of living continuing to outpace many household budgets, Canadians from all walks of life are feeling the squeeze. The Globe's guest columnists Nick Saul and Jasmine Ramze Rezaee write that Ottawa's recently released National Food Security Strategy (NFSS), however, is disappointing. It does little to help Canadians struggling with grocery costs because it overlooks the main issue: inadequate incomes. Food insecurity in Canada is more about affordability than food systems. Nearly a quarter of people in this country experience food insecurity because they can't afford the basics, and the situation appears to be worsening. The NFSS makes important commitments to strengthen Canada's food systems. But it contains no measurable targets for reducing household food insecurity. It introduces no significant new income security measures. No amount of investment in food processing or agricultural innovation will help a parent standing in the grocery aisle who simply doesn't have enough money in their bank account. Past government income supplements show that improved incomes lead to reduced food insecurity and poverty.
