The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Aug. 31, edition that Metro has reached a tentative deal with workers in Ontario. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that Metro announced on Wednesday that the bargaining committee has also unanimously recommended the new deal. The union will hold a vote on ratification of the agreement on Thursday. The Globe says neither Unifor nor Metro provided details of the new agreement on Wednesday. "This tentative agreement acknowledges the economic struggle that many of our members face," said Unifor Local 414 president Gord Currie on Wednesday. Metro called the new deal fair and equitable. Talks between the grocer and Unifor had previously stalled, as striking employees continued to demand a better wage offer from Metro. It was just the latest in a number of recent labour actions that have seen workers push for better compensation as they cope with the pressures of inflation. Canadian Labour Congress president Bea Bruske says, "We're not necessarily seeing more strikes, but we're seeing more pronounced strikes, where workers are turning down tentative agreements that their bargaining committee has tentatively agreed to with the employer, and pushing for more."
