The Financial Post reports in its Friday, Aug. 25, edition that Unifor, the union representing 3,700 workers who walked off the job at 27 Metro stores in the Toronto area last month, set up picket lines to block trucks from getting in and out of two major distribution centres on Wednesday. The Post's Jake Edmiston writes that Unifor's move was part of an attempt to break a stalemate with Metro that has dragged on for nearly four weeks. Unifor national president Lana Payne told a crowd of union members and TV news cameras at the main picket line outside a warehouse: "Metro needs to come to the table with a serious goddamn offer, because this isn't ending any time soon. No more are these workers, or any workers, willing to put up with record profits, record CEO pay and crap wages for them. That time is over." The picket lines choked off deliveries of fresh products to all Metro stores, including the Food Basics chain, across the province -- a major escalation in the weeks-long dispute, which the company complained was offside because the workers at the two warehouses are not involved in the strike. Metro spokesman Marie-Claude Bacon said: "It's unacceptable. No solution will emerge from such tactics."
