Globe says emboldened Metro union workers want more

2023-08-08 07:49 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that workers have a pointed message for their union leaders: Get back to the bargaining table and demand more. The Globe's Jason Kirby writes that in a series of current and recent strikes workers rejected tentative agreements that their unions had reached with employers, even when those unions recommended that their members vote in favour of the deals. Brock University labour professor Larry Savage says these days workers are "willing to strike rather than opt for substandard deals." He says some union leaders are out of touch with rank-and-file members. The key, he says, is that when a rejection happens, unions need to "immediately own the results and show they're going to fight." He says the strike at 27 Metro stores in and around Toronto is a case in point. Since last Saturday Metro workers have been off the job after rejecting a tentative deal negotiated and recommended by the local Unifor bargaining committee. Union negotiators thought they had made good gains, but it was not good enough for union members. With food prices and rent soaring the new money negotiated was not enough. The union wants wages boosted back to what they were during the pandemic.
