Globe/CP say end of USMCA would be bad news for Magna

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Deloitte Canada says diversifying international trade partners would only partially mitigate the impact on Canada's economy if the United States withdrew from the North American trade pact. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Canada should consider measures beyond trade diversification, like removing interprovincial trade barriers and fostering new industries, say the authors of "Tariffs: A Rough Road Leads to New Destinations." The report lays out a best- and worst-case scenario for the domestic economy amid the cross-border trade maelstrom. The worst scenario would be the dissolution of the USMCA, which the report's authors call "a possibility that cannot be dismissed." The U.S. accounted for about 70 per cent of Canada's exports in 2025. If that happens, Canada's GDP could decline by 1.6 per cent, or $402-billion, over the next decade compared with the current situation, with U.S. tariffs as of July 1 and USMCA in place. This could result in an average annual loss of 163,000 jobs. "The bottom line is a severe but not cataclysmic impact on Canada's overall economy, although perhaps cataclysmic for some sectors," wrote the report authors.
