The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that after over two decades of planning and construction, the $6.4-billion Gordie Howe bridge opened Friday in a ceremony attended by Canadian officials but no U.S. representatives. The Globe's Kate Helmore writes that the bridge has taken 25 years to complete. The first vehicle will traverse the bridge Monday. Premier Doug Ford stood next to federal Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, Ambassador to the U.S. Mark Wiseman and Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens to cut the red ribbon. American representatives were uninvited to the celebration after President Donald Trump threatened 50-per-cent tariffs against Canada. The ceremony took place on the Canadian side of the ramp leading to the bridge, not in the centre as Mr. Dilkens had envisioned. He noted that this location symbolizes the tense relations between the U.S. and Canada. "How could we possibly in good faith celebrate with folks from the United States at this particular point in time?" he said. For the trucking community, the ceremony is significant, regardless of geopolitics. The bridge is "game-changing" for efficiency, said Michael Sbrocchi at Speedy Transport. The bridge is shaped to look like a hockey stick.
