The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 7, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's trade team has agreed to resume talks after meeting U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington. The Globe's Robert Fife writes that Minister for Canada-U.S. Trade Dominic LeBlanc attended with chief negotiator Janice Charette and Ambassador Mark Wiseman. Mr. LeBlanc's spokesman said the discussions pertaining to the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement [CUSMA] were "constructive and substantive. Mr. Comeau said that the minister and Mr. Greer agreed to continue collaborating on trade issues and will reconnect in the coming days for further talks. The two top trade negotiators did not set a date for the formal resumption of discussions on the mandatory review of CUSMA. These are the first formal trade discussions between the two countries since President Donald Trump suspended negotiations in October. On Thursday, Mr. Greer held talks with Mexican Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard to prepare for a trilateral trade review. They agreed to start formal discussions next week on reducing dependence on non-North American imports, strengthening rules of origin and enhancing continental supply chains.
