The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Canadians went to the polls on Monday to elect a new government, a vote held against the unprecedented backdrop of an uncertain economic relationship with the United States. The Post's Jordan Gowling writes that ultimately, Liberal Leader Mark Carney came out on top, and he will have his work cut out for him. The first order of business for Canada's leader will be working out a deal with President Donald Trump on trade. Mr. Trump has imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and the auto sector. Other exports under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) are currently exempt, but it is unclear how long that will last. Mr. Trump has revived his "51st state" threats, and the U.S. expects allies to contribute more to defence, indicating that trade and security talks will be intertwined. Mr. Trump will be looking for concessions including in Canadian auto manufacturing, Canada's supply management system and the digital sales tax. However, Canada remains a critical source of goods such as energy, critical minerals, potash and auto parts that the U.S. cannot live without, despite the President's claims.
