The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, April 3, edition that President Donald Trump is imposing new tariffs on America's trading partners, including 20 per cent on goods from the European Union, 34 per cent for China and a minimum of 10 per cent for other countries. The Globe's Nathan VanderKlippe writes that Canada and Mexico are exempt from these new measures, although existing tariffs on North American trade will remain, including a 25-per-cent tax on foreign-made vehicles starting Thursday. This shift in economic policy threatens price increases for consumers, disrupts supply chains and may encourage other countries to adopt similar measures, despite Mr. Trump's assurances that it will boost American prosperity and industry. The U.S. is now at the forefront of dismantling a system that, according to Mr. Trump, has harmed the wealthiest nation. Mr. Trump agreed to maintain a tariff-free regime for compliant goods under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, while imposing a 25-per-cent tariff on non-compliant products. Starting Thursday, the U.S. will also impose a 25-per-cent tariff on foreign-made cars and retain existing steel and aluminum tariffs. Canada has retaliated with tariffs on $60-billion of U.S. imports.
