The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that investors are voting on the future of automotive production, and it is not promising for legacy manufacturers, especially in the U.S. The Globe's Matt Lundy writes that U.S. automakers' and Canadian auto parts makers' shares fell on Thursday after President Donald Trump announced a 25-per-cent tariff on vehicle imports and certain parts. This could disrupt decades-long supply chains and harm production and competitiveness for U.S. producers. However, as the North American industry gets hammered by tariffs, the view is rosier in another location: China. BYD Co. Ltd., the pre-eminent Chinese manufacturer of electric vehicles, has seen its shares soar by more than 50 per cent this year. BYD recently unveiled a new system that can charge its latest models in five minutes -- not much longer than it takes to fill a tank with gasoline. Canada and the U.S. have imposed high tariffs on Chinese EVs, but BYD is thriving in countries like Australia with its cheap vehicles. The Shenzhen-based company achieved about $107-billion (U.S.) in sales last year, exceeding Tesla's revenue. BYD aims to sell 5.5 million vehicles this year, including over 800,000 outside China.
