The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney calls President Donald Trump's latest tariffs a "direct attack" on Canada and Canadian auto workers. The Globe's triple bylined item reports that Mr. Carney says ties between Canada and the United States are "in the process of being broken" by Mr. Trump. Mr. Carney says this new tariff could cause substantial damage to Canada's auto sector. He says he still wants to see the written order so the scope of the trade action is clear. "We await the executive order for that clarity, but to be absolutely clear that even in the more restricted version of this, it is a significant action. It's entirely unjustified." Mr. Carney says he will respond to the tariffs soon: "We have options. We can introduce retaliatory tariffs." Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre condemns "without equivocation, [Trump's] unjustified and unprovoked tariffs announced against our auto sector." He says: "These tariffs will damage his workers and his economy just as they will damage ours. We must retaliate and target goods and services that we don't need, can buy elsewhere or make ourselves to maximize the impact on the Americans while minimizing the impact on ourselves."
