The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, March 27, edition that President Donald Trump plans to implement 25-per-cent tariffs on imported vehicles starting April 2, despite warnings from industry experts about increased costs for businesses and consumers. The Globe's Eric Atkins and Samantha Edwards write that vehicles imported under the United States-Mexico-Canada free-trade agreement will also face the same tariffs based on their non-U.S. content, with auto parts subject to future tariffs similarly assessed. The President plans to introduce "reciprocal tariffs" on April 2 to match other countries' tariffs on U.S. goods. This move is part of Mr. Trump's trade policy aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and encouraging foreign automakers to relocate to the U.S. He has expressed a desire to "permanently shut down" the Canadian auto industry, disrupting decades of free trade and jeopardizing a crucial sector of Canada's economy. Automakers and parts suppliers employ 125,000 people in Canada, mainly in Ontario, with many more in related industries. In 2024, Ontario plants operated by Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Honda and Toyota produced 1.6 million passenger vehicles, most of which were exported to the U.S.
