The President plans to introduce "reciprocal tariffs" on April 2 to match other countries' tariffs on U.S. goods. This move is part of Mr. Trump's trade policy aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and encouraging foreign automakers to relocate to the U.S. He has expressed a desire to "permanently shut down" the Canadian auto industry, disrupting decades of free trade and jeopardizing a crucial sector of Canada's economy. Automakers and parts suppliers employ 125,000 people in Canada, mainly in Ontario, with many more in related industries. In 2024, Ontario plants operated by Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Honda and Toyota produced 1.6 million passenger vehicles, most of which were exported to the U.S.
