The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, March 25, edition that Canadian business leaders are not optimistic about a reprieve as new U.S. tariffs are set to take effect in just over a week. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Automotive Parts Manufacturing Association president Flavio Volpe says, "Until a tariff comes into effect and it affects the U.S. economy I'm not confident that anybody is going to be able to push the White House back from what it's threatening to do." On April 2, the U.S. will implement new reciprocal tariffs, adding to previously delayed tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. President Donald Trump had mentioned potential sector-specific tariffs, but recent reports indicate that the reciprocal tariffs may be narrower than expected and sector-specific tariffs might be postponed. Mr. Volpe says the numerous tariffs and ongoing announcements and threats do not inspire optimism. He says, "The fact is, the President has threatened multiple layers and types of tariffs on Canada and specifically for the auto sector, and the idea that they may be willing to put some off, while still talking about putting a universal tariff on Canadian goods on April 2 is zero comfort."
