A five-bylined item led by Adrian Morrow reports that the agreement fell apart less than an hour before Friday's deadline, with Canada opposing various U.S. demands related to truck and aluminum exports, streaming rules, and trade relations with other countries. On Tuesday President Donald Trump announced an agreement, but the Americans later added surprising language to the final text. Now Mr. Trump has imposed new 50-per-cent tariffs on $20-billion (U.S.) of Canadian imports, adding to existing levies on autos, steel, aluminum, forestry and more. Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed further retaliation. The White House has said it will hit back. It harms Canada's key trade relationship, impacting businesses, workers and consumers on both sides of the border. The PM gave a succinct explanation for why the deal unravelled: "We were not prepared to compromise Canada's sovereignty or to undermine key industries. You are at war when you get attacked. We got attacked."
