The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled to mark the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge was abruptly cancelled on Thursday at the demand of the Trump administration. The Globe's Kate Helmore and Adrian Morrow write that the new bridge will be the only public connection between Detroit and Windsor, Ont. The Ambassador Bridge is owned and managed by the Moroun family. It charges vehicles double the rates of other public crossings in Ontario. The Globe has reported earlier that the Moroun family has been linked to delays. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra are negotiating a deal to protect the Moroun family from losses due to competition from the publicly owned Gordie Howe bridge. The Moroun family, who also own a trucking empire, has spent millions fighting competition and has contributed over $1-million (U.S.) to support Donald Trump's campaign. They also employed the lobbying firm Ballard Partners, which has connections within the Trump administration. Windsor city councillor Frazier Fathers says the delay "fits into a pattern that has happened over 25 years. And it impacts people's lives on a daily basis."
