The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Ottawa and Mexico City are committed to a trilateral review of the continental free-trade pact, despite the United States proposing separate bilateral deals, said Canada's trade minister Dominic LeBlanc after meeting with Mexican officials. The Globe's Mark Rendell writes that Mr. LeBlanc led a trade delegation of about 250 Canadian companies in Mexico, where he met with President Claudia Sheinbaum and Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, who is overseeing the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Mr. LeBlanc said: "The Mexicans are pursuing some bilateral challenges or issues with the United States. So is Canada. But we both remain absolutely committed to the trilateral free trade agreement and working together as this review process unfolds." Negotiations over the future of the USMCA are already happening, and will kick into high gear in the coming months. The three countries are working toward a July 1 deadline, at which point they have to decide whether to renew it for another 16 years or enter into annual reviews. They can also withdraw from the agreement with six months notice. President Donald Trump has suggested he could pull out of the deal.
