The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the trial of Magna International founder Frank Stronach for sexual assault has been moved to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that on Tuesday, Ontario Court Justice Mary Misener ordered Mr. Stronach to appear in court on Jan. 27 to schedule a trial date for five sexual assault charges involving five alleged victims. Additionally, Mr. Stronach will face another trial in Toronto for 13 charges involving eight complainants, although a date for that trial has not yet been determined. During Tuesday's session, Mr. Stronach did not attend the court in person or connect via Zoom, which prompted a rebuke from Justice Misener. "What about Mr. Stronach not being before me?" she asked Leora Shemesh, Mr. Stronach's lawyer, and Crown prosecutor Jelena Vlacic. Ms. Shemesh gave no reason for his absence, stating, "It's a quick appearance in this court, and while he should be here, I am retained and fully instructed." The judge asked Ms. Shemesh for assurances that Mr. Stronach would not contest sending his trial to a higher court for more serious cases.
The judge said, "I usually have the person here, but I'll make an exception."
