The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Feb. 25, edition that Ontario drivers are facing changes to their auto insurance policies, with some standard accident benefits now optional. The Globe's Clare O'Hara writes that this offers more consumer choice but raises concerns about potential financial struggles for those involved in serious accidents. The Ford government introduced changes in 2024, starting July 1. Medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits will remain mandatory, while other accident benefits will become optional in an "a la carte" model. Drivers must opt in for coverage that includes income replacement, non-earner benefits, caregiver benefits, educational costs, visitor expenses, housekeeping, personal item damage, death benefits and funeral costs. Consumer advocate Harvey Naglie says: "This change is more than a consumer choice reform. It is a responsibility transfer. ... Ontario is shifting from a mostly standardized package of financial protection to a build-your-own system." Mr. Naglie considers the switch high risk, especially for a complex product often bought by price-sensitive consumers with limited understanding of the trade-offs.
