The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Jan. 24, edition that last week Talia Bronstein presented the NIA's 2025 Ageing in Canada Survey, which found that Canada is officially becoming a "super-aged" country in 2026, with 15.7 million Canadians aged 50 or older. The Globe's Meera Raman reports that the survey was done in partnership with Manulife Financial and Abacus Data. Canadians are living longer, but the real question is if those extra years will be healthy and financially secure. Current data indicate we are not quite there yet. Among people who have not retired yet, the share who say they can afford to retire when they want has dropped to 29 per cent, down from 35 per cent in 2022. Nearly a quarter (22 per cent) have saved $5,000 or less for retirement. The survey reveals a concerning trend among older Canadians: Positive feelings about aging dropped from 62 per cent in 2024 to 57 per cent last year, the biggest decline recorded. Over half of respondents reported feelings of loneliness, with 43 per cent at risk of social isolation -- figures that have remained unchanged since 2022. Manulife chief Naveed Irshad says longevity is not about simply living longer, but rather "adding life to those years."
