Globe says Manulife told many early retirees struggle

2025-12-18 08:43 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that many Canadians fall into poverty just before retirement, when many are forced out of the work force because of health issues or disability, according to a new report. The Globe's Meera Raman writes that after leaving the work force early, many Canadians face years with limited income supports before public pensions begin. The study, conducted by human-rights group Maytree using 2022 data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Income Survey, found that people aged 55 to 64 are overrepresented among low-income Canadians, particularly those with disabilities. Canadians aged 60 to 64 make up 8.3 per cent of the overall population but account for 10.5 per cent of those living on low incomes, which is defined as having an annual disposable income that is less than the market-basket measure poverty threshold. It represents the cost of a modest standard of living and is Canada's official poverty measure. Many people in their late 50s and early 60s leave the labour force earlier than planned owing to health conditions or disabilities that accumulate over years of work. Manulife has found that only 15 per cent of early retirees left work because they had saved enough to do so.
