The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, June 19, edition that the federal government has agreed to amend Ottawa's controversial lawful access bill, including protections for encryption, following criticism from Apple, Google, Meta, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and civil liberties groups. The Globe's Marie Woolf writes that changes to the bill diluted some of its most contentious elements. MPs approved around a dozen amendments proposed by Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree and a few from Liberal MPs. Earlier this week, Ottawa introduced a guillotine motion to end debate on bill amendments in committee and to expedite its passage through Commons stages before MPs' summer break. The bill will go to the Senate for consideration when Parliament returns in September. Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and Ecommerce Law at the University of Ottawa, said pushing these amendments through without any public discussion, debate or even knowledge on what was being voted on was undemocratic. Bill C-22 would allow the government to require tech companies in Canada to modify their systems for police and CSIS surveillance capabilities.
