The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that a three-year probe by federal and provincial privacy regulators found that Microsoft-backed OpenAI breached laws regarding personal information during the release of ChatGPT. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that the report revealed that OpenAI collected large amounts of personal data without proper safeguards or consent, leaving many users unaware their information was used to train artificial intelligence models. Federal and provincial regulators criticized OpenAI for not providing Canadians a simple way to correct or delete personal information and for launching ChatGPT without addressing known privacy risks. The report also noted inadequate notice regarding inaccuracies in ChatGPT responses. OpenAI's practices have changed since the Canadian Privacy Commissioner's probe into ChatGPT began. Changes include filtering to mask personal information, tools to prevent ChatGPT from disclosing details about public figures, and a formal data retention and deletion policy. Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, industry practices have continued to evolve. The regulators' report notes that OpenAI retired the AI models that were initially subject to their investigation.
