The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Liberal Party delegates passed a resolution for a minimum age of 16 for social media accounts, with Manitoba and other provinces proposing similar measures. The Globe's guest columnist Kara Brisson-Boivin writes that three-quarters of Canadians support the idea. Many on-line safety experts, however, are urging caution. Good intentions do not equal good policy. The evidence on this issue is complex. Canadians are justifiably concerned; an Angus Reid survey reveals that 94 per cent are worried about social media's impact on youth mental health, and 90 per cent about cyberbullying. These concerns are valid, as platforms often prioritize capturing attention over protecting well-being. However, current research shows that bans may not be the solution many expect. Australia's new ban on youth social media use is still being assessed for effectiveness. Early reports indicate that kids are circumventing restrictions or using less regulated platforms. Historically, many eight- to 10-year-olds in Australia and Canada have used social media before the minimum age of 13, suggesting existing age limits have not been successful in keeping children off these platforms.
