The National Post reports in its Wednesday, April 24, edition that British Columbia has halted its proposed legislation on on-line harms after reaching an agreement with several social media companies. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post reports that the agreement involves sitting down together to find solutions that will promote on-line safety. Premier David Eby stated that the proposed legislation will remain, and the province will reactivate it if necessary. The agreement includes a promise to achieve meaningful results before the end of the government's term and to form an on-line safety action table where they will discuss steps to protect people from on-line harm. The announcement to put the bill on hold is a sharp turn for Mr. Eby's government, after the premier announced in March that social media companies were among the "wrongdoers" that would pay for health-related costs linked to their platforms in the proposed legislation. At the time, Mr. Eby compared social media harms with those caused by tobacco and opioids. Mr. Eby said on Tuesday that Meta reached out to the province, and the discussions resulted in "assurance from Facebook" to also work with B.C. emergency officials to deliver and amplify public information in case of natural disasters such as wildfires.
