The National Post reports in its Thursday edition that in the last few decades, some school boards in Ontario have adopted untested teaching approaches instead of proven ones, prioritized diversity quotas over merit, and have not always ensured the safety of students and staff. The Post's Jamie Sarkonak writes that this has led to a decline in academic performance. However, instead of addressing these issues, some school boards are blaming social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok for their shortcomings and are taking legal action against them. Four school boards in Ontario -- Toronto District School Board, Peel District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, and Ottawa-Carleton District School Board -- have claimed that social media products are "negligently designed for compulsive use" and have had a negative impact on children's thinking, behaviour and learning. The boards' lawyers released a news statement stating that these products have "rewired the way children think, behave and learn, leaving educators and schools to manage the fallout." The strength of the suit does not look great; it will be difficult for the school boards to establish that they have been harmed.
