The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that four of Canada's largest school boards have filed lawsuits against social-media giants, alleging that their platforms are harming the mental health of students. The Globe's Caroline Alphonso writes that there is a pressing need for stricter government policies on on-line content that is being served to children. Last week, the Toronto District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Peel District School Board filed separate statements of claim in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. They accused Meta's Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok of negligently designing products that have an adverse effect on student behaviour. The companies have been accused of creating products that are designed to rewire student behaviour. The boards say the compulsive use of social-media platforms has strained their limited resources. Staff spend more time addressing aggressive behaviour. School boards are forced to invest in more mental-health programs and personnel, as well as cybersecurity. The boards are advancing combined claims of about $4.5-billion. None of the allegations has been proven in court.
