The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, April 3, edition that four Ontario school boards are taking legal action against Meta, Snap and ByteDance, the owners of Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. The Globe's guest columnist Naomi Buck writes that the lawsuit alleges the four platforms are responsible for a laundry list of teen pathologies, including distraction, isolation, cyberbullying, aggression and declining mental health. The suit also alleges that the companies behind the platforms have designed their products to be addictive and to prey on adolescent vulnerabilities. The Ontario lawsuit, which follows more than 200 similar cases launched by school boards south of the border, is asking social media companies to redesign their platforms and to provide the four boards with more than $4-billion in compensation. Involved in the suit are school boards from Toronto, Ottawa-Carleton and Peel, as well as the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Ms. Buck says there is no question that social media and cellphones have messed kids up. She says as the mother of teens, she has seen it with her own eyes. Ms. Buck also blames the school boards for getting hooked on using digital devices as educational tools.
