The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 30, edition that 51 per cent of Canadians support the idea of banning TikTok. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Canada has ordered a national security review of TikTok, following the enactment of a U.S. bill earlier this month. Only 28 per cent of the 1,605 people surveyed by Leger said they would oppose the ban. However, it is important to note that the poll may not be entirely accurate as on-line polls are not considered to be truly random samples and hence do not have a margin of error. Younger Canadians, who are also more likely to use TikTok, are less supportive of a ban than their older counterparts. Nearly half of those between 18 and 34 reported being on TikTok, compared with 12 per cent of poll respondents over 55. Leger vice-president Christian Bourque says, "In terms of those who support the ban and those who have specific concerns regarding TikTok, it's mostly among older Canadians who don't use TikTok." Among younger Canadians, 42 per cent are in favour of a ban, compared with 59 per cent of those 55-plus. In Canada, TikTok appears to be significantly less popular than social media platforms such as Meta's Facebook and Instagram.
