The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that European Union regulators have commenced investigations into Apple, Alphabet's Google and Meta on the grounds of non-compliance with the newly-enforced Digital Markets Act. An Associated Press dispatch to the Post reports that the act targets Big Tech gatekeeper companies that provide core platform services, with the aim of creating more open and competitive digital markets. The rules require these companies to comply with a set of guidelines to prevent them from monopolizing the market and locking consumers into their products or services, under threat of hefty financial penalties or even breaking up their businesses. The European Commission (EC) has received complaints that some tech companies are not fully complying with the regulations, and as a result, it has launched an investigation into these suspected non-compliance issues. EC vice-president Margrethe Vestager said: "Today, we decided to investigate a number of these suspected non-compliance issues. And as we unearth other problems, we will tackle those too." She added: "The companies have been ordered to hold on to certain documents that the commission can access in current and future investigations."
